Most recently, Google released the Nest Hub Max, putting Google Assistant in a 10-inch smart display. It's the first product to come out under the converged brand name of Google and smart home security brand Nest. Now in its third generation, the Echo Dot doesn't have the best audio quality in the range, so it's best suited for rooms where music playback won’t be its primary function. That said, you can pair it up with a Bluetooth speaker or another audio device using an AUX jack connection, making it a cost-effective upgrade you can make to any aging Hi-Fi system. The Echo Show 2 has two separate 2-inch speakers, a passive bass radiator, and Dolby processing that come together for some impressive sound — much improved over the Echo Show first edition. For now, it looks like the Show 2 has the upper hand in full-room sound.
Call it a convergence if you like, but it's really just a natural evolution of our relationship with the web. In the beginning, we accessed it using computers equipped with noisy dial-up modems. Smartphones ushered in the age of the mobile internet, where we could take a connection to the cloud with us in our pockets. Now, for those that want it, the internet is an invisible presence that fills our homes Dot by Dot, Home Mini by Home Mini, always listening for our next question or command.
Google Home Hub vs Amazon Echo Show
If you're looking for a small Echo speaker, your best best then is the Echo Spot, which despite its size, offers a richer sound. The screen, however, massively increases its expense, so bear that in mind – if you don't want a screen, the Echo Dot with Clock is an attractive option. With beefed-up sound at the price of a standard Echo model it's well worth looking at the third-gen Echo if you're thinking of buying a new smart speaker.

Our in-house test pitting Alexa against Siri and Google Assistant saw Google Assistant emerge second-best performer. You can now send audio to your group with your voice or the Alexa app. To prepare both devices for pairing with a voice command, use "Pair Bluetooth" on both Google Home and Alexa.
Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen) Review
But that's not to say the Google Home Hub is light on features. For one, it comes with a 'voice match' function that can recognize who is giving it orders and tailor the response to your individual user profile. That means you can start your day with tailored information on the day's weather, your commute, upcoming calendar meetings and anything else you've set up the Hub to remind you about. Although Siri is a robust voice assistant, it doesn't exactly meet the standards we've come to expect from Apple products. Google Home's ecosystem trails Alexa in the number of supported devices. According to Statista, Google Assistant is compatible with more than 50,000 devices made by thousands of manufacturers globally.
He has been reporting on technology since 1999 and has been an invited speaker at events including CES and CEDIA. He has completed certification classes from THX, ISF, and Control4. Cooks and frequent Google app users who want to access Google Assistant via a screen will love this display, which is well-integrated with Google Calendar and Photos. One of the other search-related advantages Google Assistant offers over Alexa is the ability to track the context of your queries based on previous inputs. For instance, after you ask “Hey Google, when did the Sex Pistols form?

The Nest Hub lacks a camera, but you can still accept video calls and use voice chat. The Nest Hub Max is the only first-party Google smart display capable of making full video calls, both sending and receiving video. You can make Google Duo calls to other Google users with either smart display, and join both Google Meet and Zoom conference calls with the Nest Hub Max. The Echo Show 10 is unique among these models with its motorized base that can rotate the screen to follow you as you use it.
Google shared an example of how this works during the release event. Alexa cannot do this but is able to perform the same tasks with fewer words. Become a home entertainment expert with our handpicked tips, reviews and deals.
If it’s audio you’re after, both devices are speakers and can play music, podcasts, audiobooks, and any other audio you throw at them. Since neither has a screen, however, don’t look for them to work with video. That means that it can’t make video calls, which the Show and other smart displays offer with a simple voice command. Google appears worried that people will think the Home Hub is spying on them if it includes a camera.

But the Google portion of the Nest Mini isn’t quite as capable as we’d like. And while it has some smart-home integrations and third-party Actions comparable to Alexa’s Skills, it has fewer of either than Alexa does, though it continues to improve. We recommend a few other Google Assistant devices below and have a guide to the best smart displays and the best Google Assistant devices. Finally, smart displays of this size and caliber are meant to serve as hubs for other smart home devices, either literally or symbolically .
The Google Home Hub and Echo Show are both formidable smart displays, but they are very different in terms of price, size and features. If we know anything about smart speakers, displays, and the like, it's that a lot of these features are likely to change or be updated in software patches down the line. So keep an eye out on this page for new fixes and updates that could swing the balance in favor of one or the other. Smart speakers anchor your smart device ecosystem, enabling your smart devices from different manufacturers to connect and interact with each other. Besides simply streaming videos from those services, both smart displays can show useful information like weather reports and sports scores, step-by-step recipes, and other handy graphical and video content..

Alexa's Drop In feature only works with other Alexa-enabled devices. The Nest Hub has a floating display with a back like an angled pedestal propping up the larger display. This makes the Nest Hub better for setting up on tight spaces shared with other objects, such as a shelf or the corner of a table. Want an assistant that can handle a proper chat and can understand you like a normal human? The value of Google Assistant is its natural language recognition and that you can issue several commands without having to say the “Hey Google” wake phrase each time.
Comparably, Siri offers six accents and different voices within those settings, including a gender-neutral one, and Google offers 10 main assistant voices. To locate a Tuya Smart device to sync with Google Home, use its “looking for devices” feature and identify the device. If both are using the same Wi-Fi network, they should connect in no time. I'm seeing the same problem with Alexa that started a few days ago. On the next screen it attempts to find a hub, which it does not (as I'm not connected to wifi).
